The digital fabrication lab offers various pieces of equipment that require training before students can use them. Some machines need an entire section of students to be trained at once, while other equipment can be taught on a case-by-case basis. If students are interested in receiving training on any of the machines, they can contact a technician for assistance.
The 187 woodshop contains the same equipment as the Spatial Dynamics classroom shops and is a resource available to EFS students outside of regular class hours.
Students are welcome to utilize the woodshop equipment once they have successfully completed the mandatory EFS bandsaw box training.
Students are required to follow safety guidelines while using the 187 Benefit Street Woodshop. This means that students must:
Wear close toed shoes
Wear safety glasses
Wear ear protection
Tie back long hair
Act responsibly and use common sense
Avoid distractions
Students must not:
Wear headphones
Loose dangling clothing, jewelry, or lanyards
Using equipment while tired or under the influence of drugs/alcohol
The 187 workspace is available for students to work on their projects and is equipped with a wide selection of hand and power tools not available in the classroom studios.
To ensure a safe work environment, all visitors to 187 must wear closed-toed shoes and appropriate work clothing.
Students should keep their work area organized and clean up after using the shop equipment, ensuring the space remains accessible and tidy for everyone.
There is no overnight storage available for student work. Projects requiring overnight drying, like glued pieces, must have permission from a monitor or technician. Students should attach a completed overnight glue-up form to their work and pick it up within 24 hours to avoid any accidental disposal.
Assistance from studio technicians and monitors is readily available, whether students need advice on woodworking techniques, help with specific tools or other insights to support their creative process.
